Q.What is Sun City?

A. With a population of about 45,000, Sun City is the country's first and largest adult community designed for active retirees. Sun City is one of the cleanest cities in the country, and enjoys one of the nation's lowest crime rates.

Q.Where is Sun City?

A. Sun City is conveniently located a half hour's drive northwest of downtown Phoenix, Arizona. It is in the Valley of the Sun which has 312 days of sunshine each year.

Q.Who may be a resident of Sun City?

A. To live here, one member of the family must be at least 55 years old. Other residents must be at least 19 years old. There is no age restriction on ownership.

Q.What about younger children?

A. Children are among Sun City's most welcome visitors, and many special programs and activities are planned for them during vacation times. Children of all ages enjoy swimming, miniature golf, bowling, table tennis, racquetball, tennis and visiting the local libraries. Younger children may live in Sun City temporarily in emergency circumstances.

Q.What does the community offer the active resident?

A. Sun City has more than 350 civic, service, church, charitable, cultural, recreational and travel groups which offer a wide range of activities. There are 11 golf courses with over 30 miles of fairway probably the largest golf complex anywhere. There are also swimming pools, bowling alleys, exercise tracks, weight rooms, lawn bowling, racquetball, tennis, square dancing, ballroom dancing, fishing on a private lake, and the list goes on.

Q.Where do all these activities take place?

A. Except for golf, these activities are accommodated at seven recreation centers conveniently located throughout Sun City. In addition, these centers offer courses in ceramics, needle arts, calligraphy, weaving, and painting on anything from cloth to china. There are shops for woodworking, metalworking, lapidary, silvercraft, stained glass and even model railroading. Two libraries provide excellent resources for reading and research.

Q.What is the cost of using the recreation centers? (Fees subject to change)

A. For $lOO per year, any resident has full use of all recreation facilities except bowling and golf Unlimited play on any of the eight golf courses belonging to the Sun City Recreation Centers is $595 per person per year. Golf is also available at these courses on a per round basis. Bowling is $1 per line. Out-of-town guests of residents may also use the recreational facilities at nominal cost. In addition, there are three private country clubs in Sun City.

Q.What is the price range of homes in Sun City?

A. Homes in Sun City range from about $40,000 for a small individual house or condominium to $200,000 for a spacious home on a lake or golf course. There is a home in Sun City to meet everyone's need and lifestyle.

Q.What are the property taxes in Sun City?

A. Compared to most areas of the country, property taxes in Sun CIty are extremely low. The tax on an $80,000 home is less than $400 per year.

Q.What types of transportation are most used in Sun City?

A. Second to the automobile in popularity in Sun City is the golf cart. Many people use their golf cart as a second vehicle for running errands. Bicycles, both two- and three-wheelers, are a common sight. And nearly everybody walks.

Q.What shopping facilities are available?

A. In Sun City, seven major shopping centers plus several smaller plazas offer a wide choice of goods and services. And one of the largest shopping centers in the Phoenix metropolitan area is just 20 minutes away.

Q.What financial and professional services are available in Sun City?

A. There are 14 banks, as well as 15 brokerage and financial planning offices, located throughout the community. In addition, many professionals provide accounting, legal and insurance services to local residents.

Q.What health care services are there?

A. Boswell Memorial Hospital, one of the state's finest, is located in the heart of Sun City. Three other hospitals are less than 15 minutes away, and Mayo Clinic is approximately 30 miles east of Sun City. These facilities are augmented by a complete range of medical and dental clinics En and around Sun City.

Q.What special care services are provided?

A. In addition to facilities for an active lifestyle, Sun City has everything needed by someone temporarily or permanently handicapped. SCAT (Sun City Area Transit) provides inexpensive door-to-door service anywhere within Sun ate. Red Cross vans drive residents to and from medical appointments as needed. Meals on Wheels provides food to residents who cannot prepare or buy their own meals. Sunshine Service carries a large supply of sickroom equipment and supplies for residents, and such items as roll away beds and carseats for temporary visitors. In addition, the Sun City area has more than 20 care facilities with services ranging from assisted living to complete skilled care.

Q.What else is there in or near Sun City?

A. For refreshing the spirit, Sun City has 30 churches and synagogues. For stretching the mind, a branch of Arizona State University and Rio Salado Community College offer a wide range of courses for continuing education. In the field of culture, activities include highly acclaimed symphony and chamber music organizations, a fine arts museum, amateur play groups and rhythm bands, and the 7,000-seat Sundome Center for the Performing Arts in Sun City West. And within an hour's drive of Sun City you can watch these live sporting events in season: professional football (Cardinals), basketball (Suns), and baseball (Cactus League Spring Training); minor league baseball (Firebirds) and hockey (Roadrunners); college sports (Arizona State University and Grand Canyon University); and Senior League baseball played in Sun City Stadium.
