Sun City West, Arizona

Sun City West, about a dozen miles northwest of Phoenix, is a master-planned active adult community for people 55 and over. It began in 1978 when all available land in Sun City, which is two miles east, was built upon.

The community, together with Sun City, has been rated the third best location out of 100 top-rated retirement communities in the nation. Nearly 24,000 residents call Sun City West home and when the community is fully completed there will be a population of 32,000. Sun City West is not incorporated.

Sun City West is designed for an active way of life with eight golf courses and four recreation centers. Numerous clubs and civic organizations are available. Residents are often said to be ìtoo busy to retire.î

PRINCIPAL ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES
The majority of Sun City West residents are retired and income is derived from Social Security, stocks and bonds, investments and savings. Hundreds of jobs are created by Sun City West residents with most employment going to people from El Mirage, Surprise, Glendale and Peoria.

SCENIC ATTRACTIONS
The Sundome Center for the Performing Arts is located in Sun City West. It has more than 7,000 seats and brings top name entertainment to the area in a number of shows each year.

Lake Pleasant Regional Park is to the north and provides boating, fishing, swimming and other water sports. The lake has recently been expanded to 10,000 acres.

White Tanks Regional Park is to the west and has unusual Indian petroglyphs or rock carvings in its 26,000 acres. Camping, hiking and picnicking are popular activities here.

The area northwest of Sun City West is known as ìgold countryî and many interesting ghost towns are found in the Hieroglyphic and Bradshaw Mountains. Vulture, Bumblebee, Constellation, Octave, Tip Top and Crown King are just some of the old mining towns found in the area.

Pioneer Arizona Living History Museum is northeast of Sun City West. It is a faithful replica of an 1880s Arizona village with many original buildings taken from historic towns in the state. Costumed volunteers put on demonstrations such as quilting and blacksmithing. Pioneer is closed in the summer.

The Black Canyon Shooting Range, northeast of Sun City West, is a Maricopa County park with 1,400 acres devoted to indoor/outdoor rifle and pistol ranges, and also offers five miles of archery trails.

COMMUNITY FACILITIES

Sun City West offers a broad range of community facilities including four recreation centers that have swimming, tennis, arts and crafts, a library, a museum, eight golf courses (one public), one private country club, a community services building, an orchestra, and The Sundome Center for Performing Arts.

Communication.
Sun City West is served by daily newspapers from Phoenix. There is also a daily paper from Sun City, the Daily News Sun, and two weekly papers produced locally, The Wester and The Sun Cities Independent. Numerous radio and television stations are received from Phoenix. Cable TV is also available.

Educational.
Rio Salado Community College, located in Sun City West, offers continuing adult education courses. Glendale Community College, eight miles away in Glendale, offers an Associate of Arts degree. The American Graduate School of International Management, eight miles east of Sun City West, offers a Masters degree program. ASU West Campus is 10 miles away.

Medical.
There is one local hospital with 203 beds, three area hospitals within a 10-mile radius, numerous nursing/health care centers within a 15-mile radius, and approximately 50 physicians and dentists available.

Financial.
Nine financial institutions have branch offices in Sun City West.

Governmental.
The community of Sun City West is governed by the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, and served by the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, the volunteer Sun City West Posse and the local fire department.

Airport.
Residents of Sun City West have access to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (28-minute drive), which is served by all major airlines, Glendale Municipal Airport, seven miles away, and the Phoenix-Goodyear Airport, also seven miles away.

Lodging And Meeting Facilities. There are several motels and RV parks within a three-to-five-mile radius. Also, two meeting facilities are available, with the largest seating 600 persons.
